Minute to Win It!! Maximizing every minute as a child life specialist in an outpatient setting

During this interactive presentation, participants will be provided with proven ways to establish rapport and professional relationships, promote advocacy and learn about prioritization in outpatient settings. Participants will be versed in overcoming possible challenges which one may encounter when covering several clinics and learn concrete examples of ways to promote creativity and enhance critical thinking skills while developing coping strategies for patients.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will glimpse into the typical day of a child life specialist in outpatient clinics and learn about the importance of play in an outpatient setting.

2. Participants will learn useful ways to serve as an advocate for patients and families 

3. Participants will be educated in utilizing proven methods by specialists to prioritize busy schedules.

Cecilia Mendiola

Cecilia has been a certified child life specialist since 2009. She also received a Graduate Academic Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis which has helped educate staff about ways to help with patients who have autism in the medical setting. She is currently a senior child life specialist in the Specialty Care Center at Children’s Health Dallas where she covers Orthopedics, radiology, urology, pulmonology, special procedures clinic and other various outpatient specialty clinics. Cecilia is also part of the student Programming Committee and has taught student groups on therapeutic relationships and professional boundaries. Cecilia regularly supervises child life students and educates team members about child life services and is also a member of the Texas Association of Child Life Professionals and on the Student Programming Committee.
