Ethical Concerns Regarding Diagnosis Disclosure: A Case Study Discussion

Disclosure of any medical diagnosis often includes numerous challenges.  In the world of HIV, stigma and discrimination play a significant role in determining the appropriate time to share the diagnosis with a child.  This presentation will utilize a case study to discuss overall ethical concerns regarding youth disclosure. 

Learning Objectives:

  • 1. Participants will gain an understanding of human immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV) and how youth of today are affected.
  • 2. Participants will have an understanding of the stigma related to HIV and the numerous adversities faced by those who are HIV positive. 
  • 3. Participants will engage in discussion related to the ethical concerns of HIV disclosure with youth.

Lauren McCann

Lauren McCann began her career in 2004 at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.  For 11 years Lauren served within the Child Life Services division, first as a specialist and then as manager.  In 2015, she moved outside the walls of the hospital and into the Community Outreach division as Director of Community Programs in which she led multiple grant-funded initiatives.  In 2020, Lauren transitioned into the role of Director of Operations for Le Bonheur Pediatrics, the hospital-owned primary care practices.  This role uniquely combines Lauren’s hospital and community outreach experience and allows for creativity in our ability to effectively serve children and families.  While she is still very new into the position, Lauren is thrilled by the opportunity to collaborate within the primary care setting.
