Pediatric Medical Traumatic Stress & Secondary Traumatic Stress: Signs, Symptoms, and Interventions

The impact of a child's life-changing illness or injury on the child and their caregivers is well-established. If left unaddressed or untreated can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). By the end of this presentation, child life specialists will be better equipped to understand the impact of pediatric medical traumatic stress (PMTS) and provide interventions to ensure more holistic, family-centered care.

Objectives:

Define Pediatric Medial Traumatic Stress (PMTS) and comprehend its impact on the entire family.

Participants will learn about research-based and research-informed therapeutic interventions to help support children and their families.

Explore secondary traumatic stress (STS) and the impact on child life specialists.

Nemours Children's Hospital - Delaware Valley

Katherine Okonak is a clinical research coordinator in the Center for Healthcare Delivery Science at Nemours Children's Hospital, as well as a team member with the Center for Pediatric Traumatic Stress which is co-located at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Nemours Children's Hospital. Katherine is a licensed social worker who has worked clinically with pediatric patients, primarily in hematology/oncology. Her work now focuses on psychosocial research involving various patient populations including cystic fibrosis, type 1 diabetes, and cancer.  She has also participated in poster presentations, podium presentations, and facilitated trainings on both the research studies she is involved in and on trauma informed care.
