About us
Sara's Smiles Foundation, a (501(C)(3) organization, supports children with cancer and their families. It was created in memory of 5 year-old Sara Burke to carry on her legacy of hope, determination, and cheer.
Sara was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 4 and passed away after a courageous 10 month battle at the age of 5. During the 7 long months that she lived in the hospital, Sara underwent multiple surgeries, chemotherapy treatments, stem cell transplants, and therapies of all sorts. Through it all, she battled her disease with an unwavering positive attitude. Although physically isolated, Sara was able to harness the power of love from her family, friends, and community. The many happy memories Sara experienced in the hospital are the inspiration behind Sara's Smiles. Our mission is to extend a loving hand in helping to create a warmer, more personal, more empowered experience for children struggling with cancer by providing a variety of resources to entertain, comfort, and educate. The 2 major services of Sara's Smiles are our Inspiration Kits and website.
Our Inspiration Kits contain items in a durable, portable box. These items are designed to help families stay organized, connect with others, and explore creative ways to encourage smiles. Activities, projects, and color can transform a stark, sterile hospital room into a warmer, more personal space. Inspiration Kits are provided free of charge to all hospitals and facilities with whom Sara’s Smiles is partnered. Our partners can order as many and as frequently as needed.
Our website, www.saras-smiles.org, helps both the child and the attending family in the hospital as well as at home by offering valuable resources in a wide spectrum of categories. All resources featured on our website are free to the patients and families who need them.
