Many clinicians are concerned that the vasoconstrictive properties of EMLA will impede successful venipuncture and intravenous cannulation in children. This presentation reviews the steps involved in conducting an evidenced based practice project and creating an evidenced based practice statement. The research related to the impact EMLA has on vein access and strategies for disseminating the findings will be reviewed.

Objectives:
Describe the benefits of providing pain management to children undergoing needle-related procedures.
Clarify the effect EMLA cream has on the success of venipuncture and IV cannulation.
Discuss the successes and challenges of implementing a change in practice based on this evidence.
