Creating an Enriched Community-based Internship Experience: It Takes a Village to Raise a Child Life Specialist

Supporting sustainable growth in the Child Life profession means expanding community-based practice through the development of high-quality internships for aspiring Child Life Specialists. Learn about how different community internship sites developed dynamic opportunities for interns and how you can implement this approach. This session shares how these diverse experiences significantly improve services and build skills in child life practice.

Objectives:
Gain strategies to overcome typical barriers of providing internship opportunities in community Child Life practice(s).
Identify the successes and challenges of two different community-based child life programs/practices hosting internships.
Discuss the need for and benefit of hosting interns within community child life practices.
Identify the steps to implement a community-based internship through adaptations that meet the needs of the specific Child Life site, both within clinical Hospital settings and in community programs.

Morgan Livingstone has been passionately working in a Child Life community based child life practice since 2003. Morgan works locally in children's homes, hospitals, hospices and clinics providing traditional child life supports and preparations to children of all ages facing serious illness, surviving trauma, anxiety, illness of a family member, and loss/bereavement. Morgan also works in many low income countries around the world providing child life clinical supervision, education and hands on learning to build locally sustainable, locally staffed, culturally appropriate child life programs.
