Child Life Clinical Intern Supervisor Course (Cohort 5)

Providing students with excellent supervision is critical to advancing the child life profession. Whether you are preparing to supervise your first intern, or you have been supervising for years, building and advancing your supervision skill set is an imperative part of your professional journey. This course is composed of 6 modules over 6 weeks. The modules are a mix of independent and live learning components. Those who successfully complete the course will earn 7.5 PDUs (Suggested Domain: Professional Responsibility) and a digital badge in recognition of Supervisory Excellence. Once purchased, no refunds will be provided. Please verify your availability for the 3 live section meetings (listed below) before purchasing the course.

Live section meetings will occur on the following dates/times (Please note these times are in Eastern Time):

1. Thursday, September 26, 2024 from 6-7:30pm ET

2. Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 6-8pm ET (last half hour optional)

3. Wednesday, October 30, 2024 from 6-7:30pm ET

Course Objectives and Goals:

  • Build a community of clinical supervisors to enhance the confidence of emerging professionals in the child life field.
  • Create a standard curriculum and resources for clinical supervisors to develop effective child life internships.
  • Create an accessible platform for emerging clinical supervisors in the child life field through an interactive synchronous learning environment.

I. Module 1: Course Overview - Getting Started in Internship Supervision (Live Component on September 7th from 6-7:30pm EST)

IV. Module 4: Communication and Supervision (Live Component on September 28th from 6-8:00pm EST)

V. Module 5: Tasks of an Internship (Independent Learning)

VI. Module 6: Ethical Scenarios and Sustaining Connectivity (Live Component on October 12th from 6-7:30pm EST)

Jenny Brandt (Moderator)

MS, CCLS

Jenny Brandt is a Child Life Supervisor at St Louis Children's Hospital where she oversees the child life assistant team, activity areas and newer child life specialists that join the department. Prior to moving into leadership, Jenny was a clinical child life specialist for 16 years, covering both inpatient and outpatient units and served as the internship coordinator for 13 of those years. Jenny holds a master's degree in Family and Consumer Science with an emphasis in Child Life. Jenny has volunteered with the ACLP on the Internship Accreditation Task Force, Internship Accreditation Oversight Committee, Education and Training Committee and the Child Life Journal Review committee. Jenny lives in St Louis, MO with her husband and two sons.

Emily Mozena (Moderator)

MA, CCLS, CTRS

Emily Mozena is a Professor of Instruction at The University of Iowa, teaching several courses at the undergraduate and graduate level each semester and is the program director for the B.S. in Therapeutic Recreation and the M.S. in Health & Human Physiology with a sub-Track Child Life. Emily Mozena has a master's degree in Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation. In addition, she is currently working on her PhD in Educational Psychology and Learning Sciences. She is dually certified in Therapeutic Recreation (CTRS) and Child Life (CCLS), with an additional training with the Registered Wonders and Worries Provider (RWWP) program. Emily was a senior child life specialist at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital for 7 years and then began teaching, and now has been teaching for over 18 years at the University of Iowa. Her research interests are in school re-entry for children with chronic illness and extended hospitalization and with children and adolescents and their coping and resiliency when their parent is diagnosed with cancer. She has two daughters, two dogs, and one husband, and lives in Iowa City.

Michelle Mathews (Moderator)

MS, CCLS

Michelle Mathews is a Certified Child Life Specialist working at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children. Clinically, she provides services in pre-op and radiology. Additionally, she is the student coordinator for both pre-internship and internship learners, helping to create the program in 2002. To engage in learning new skills, Michelle became the secondary handler to one of the facility dogs in the Canines for Coping program at Huntsville Hospital.  Michelle holds a master's degree in Human Development and Family Studies with an emphasis in Child Life. Her interests and focus are derived from her strong belief for the support of both students and supervisors alike.  Born from this desire, she led the creation of the Southeastern Association of Child Life Professionals in 2017 and continues to be supportive in several roles.  Michelle lives in Huntsville, Alabama with her husband, the comings and goings of four step-children, and a menagerie of animals.
