This session will examine an established in-hospital program that has successfully integrated Registered Health Play Specialists with Certified Child Life Specialists and Child Life Assistants. This collaborative effort supports 399 pediatric inpatient beds and serves children and families from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds, both nationally and internationally.

1. Describe the benefits of a program with both Registered Health Play Specialists and Certified Child Life Specialists
2. Identify and explain the benefits of having a multinational team from various cultures and religions and the wealth of knowledge, flexibility, and adaptability it provides the program.
3. Recognize the challenges of working with a diverse population who predominately are from Eastern cultures with staff primarily from Western cultures to foster cross-cultural understanding and provide the best care.

Jennifer Lugg is a Certified Child Life Specialist with over 10 years of experience. Jen has a Master’s Degree in Community and Disability Studies and a Bachelor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies from her home country of Canada. She has worked at Sidra Medicine for over 2 years as a Child Life Specialist II, supporting the ICU, Complex Care, and Nephrology.
Jen’s previous experience also includes Hospice and Respite care, Surgery, and Emergency. Jen is an advocate for teaching kids about what is happening to them in the medical environment based on their development level. She is passionate about educating and its many benefits for patients and families during their medical journey.

Mikki E. Huckett
Child Life Specialist II

Mikki Huckett holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Integrated Services for Children and Young People. She is a registered Health Play Specialist, practicing for 9 years prior to relocating to Qatar. Previously based in the UK, Mikki worked with multiple pediatric departments, including Bone Marrow Transplant, General Pediatrics, and outpatient clinics/Allergy Clinic. Mikki has been working at Sidra Medicine in Qatar for two years. She works as a Child Life Specialist II in Cardiology and Endocrine, Neurology, and Orthopedics. Mikki is passionate about creating resources to support patient’s education and understanding as well as art to supplement her practice in supporting patient’s psychosocial needs.
