
Tension Between the Two: Navigating ethical responsibility and duty to provide care amidst an increasingly violent healthcare landscape - 2024 Child Life Conference
The healthcare environment has seen an unprecedented increase in violence toward healthcare workers. Distressed patients and families may respond with threats or acts of violence toward providers focused on care and healing. This presentation will discuss the ethical responsibility of child life professionals within potentially violent patient care situations, including how to utilize an ethics-based framework to address the pull between professional duty and personal safety.

Jessica Liles is the Director of Volunteer & Family Support at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. She began her career at Le Bonheur in 2006, following a dual internship in music therapy and child life. As a Certified Child Life Specialist, Jessica worked in direct clinical care for over a decade before moving into a formal leadership role. Currently, Jessica leads a variety of programs aimed at enhancing the patient and family experience, a responsibility that inspires her continual growth and learning. Outside of her professional endeavors, Jessica enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, traveling, and playing Aunt Neta’s card game. Jessica is passionate about fostering joy, laughter and meaningful connections, recognizing these as essential elements for well-being in both her personal and professional life.
