Who's the Boss: Ethical Considerations When Caregivers Decline Preparation

When caregivers decline preparation for healthcare events, child life specialists are tasked with balancing the primacy of patient and family centered care with our professional judgment rooted in evidence-based practice. We will discuss the inherent delicacy of this balance, including considerations for decision-making and specific strategies for ensuring caregivers are assisted in making safe and informed choices.

Participants will be able to:

-Verbalize current evidence of benefits and potential risks of developmentally appropriate preparation for healthcare events. 

-Develop familiarity with ethical tenets related to preparation for healthcare events.

-Discuss considerations for decision-making and specific strategies to employ when a caregiver does refuse preparation for their child.

Lauren works at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in the outpatient setting in a medical clinic that follows patients with developmental and/or behavioral diagnoses. Her work involves planning and supporting blood draws and injections, creating social narratives and prep books, and working as a member of the child life department’s adaptive care team.

Emily works as a child life specialist III with the Behavior Safety Team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Her work involves close collaboration with caregivers and the interdisciplinary team to create plans of care and provide behavioral supports and adaptions for surgeries, admissions, and ambulatory healthcare encounters to meet the needs of patient with developmental and behavioral challenges.
