Black hair stories have long been depicted through movies, songs and books to offer insight to the history and ideologies surrounding the Black hair experiences; This workshop will share that history, discuss the firsthand experience of the three presenters, and specifically highlight how to support black children in the hospital setting by focusing on interventions related to Black hair in play, coping and patient/family centered care.

Indigenous Perspectives in the Clinical Setting will examine key issues, themes, and practical information intended to better equip Child Life professionals to engage with Indigenous communities and individuals more successfully. This series will be made available to free for all our members and consists of four parts which break down central ideas. Each session is intended to be interactive and engaging. Opportunities to ask questions are encouraged both prior to and after sessions. Information is intended for Child Life professionals in all settings and attendance is encouraged for all members. Indigenous issues impact health facilities all over the United States, from the most rural facilities to large urban children’s hospitals. Each session is useful for all participants at both an interpersonal and programming level, helping to ensure equitable understanding of Indigenous issues and priorities cultivates better understanding within the healthcare setting. This intensive course will explore how the combination, or intersection, of multiple identities impacts one’s relationships. Drawing on personal reflection and historical influences, participants will investigate how their identities are connected to their professional roles within child life. Child life specialists foster trust by communicating with children in a developmentally appropriate way throughout the treatment trajectory. Developmental theory underscores the necessity of trust for communication, yet limited research supports the facilitation of intentional conversations related to diagnosis and prognosis. This presentation will report research findings on child and parent communication preferences, which will empower child life specialists to advocate for honest developmentally appropriate information throughout a patient’s treatment.
