    Regardless of the environment, healthcare clinicians partner with patients and families during their most intimate and vulnerable experiences. Some of these interactions fall under what most would consider typical or routine, but for many, healthcare experiences are filled with unexpected procedures, language barriers, mistrust, and anxiety. In the most extreme cases, patients receive life alternating diagnoses, experience trauma, or have their assumptions and expectations challenged by disease or injury. During this presentation, participants explore and challenge traditional definitions of creativity and identify potential methods of personal self-expression for the purpose of developing resiliency.     Participants will be able to develop a plan to practice and reflect on these creative processes with an intention to develop courageous coping strategies to counteract burnout and compassion fatigue

Intersectionality is used to describe how race, class, gender and other personal characteristics overlap within a person’s personality. These identities can create both advantages and disadvantages, or discrimination versus privilege. The history of the word intersectionality will be discussed, along with the evolution of the term. This webinar will include a panel of diverse child life specialists who will discuss the ways in which their individual aspects of intersectionality impact their work as child life specialists.     Learn how Child Life and Art Therapy collaborated to create a digital art therapy program for patients. Hear the results and how this program could be implemented at other sites.

    In this hospital’s PED, a number of psychiatric illness-related visits continues an upward trend. Youth with behavioral issues experience long waits before mental health evaluation and treatment placement. In collaboration with Child Life and Art Therapy, pediatric patients with psycho-emotional needs are offered digital art therapy as a nonthreatening format for emotion regulation, self-expression, increased communication and receptivity to treatment. A study was conducted with 100 patients diagnosed with mood disorders, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. Patients, utilizing a secure laptop computer, expressed what their journey looks like. The multidisciplinary collaboration in this hospital’s PED resulted in an increase of services and patient-centered care for this difficult population. The use of digital art therapy and mood assessment gave Child Life and PED staff a better understanding of the patients’ journey and affect states. The program provides pediatric patients with coping skills to decrease their anxiety, encourage self-expression, and lower the need for chemical and medical restraints, resulting in reduced stress in the healthcare team and a more supportive care environment

    Objectives:

    Describe the multi-disciplinary collaborative components, benefits and challenges of Child Life and Digital Art Therapy in the PED.

    Identify the effective communication and intervention strategies utilized to meet the needs of behavioral health youth in crisis.

    Report the outcomes achieved through PED child life specialist’s assessment and referrals for effective digital art therapy sessions.

    Review and discuss the efficacy of the digital modality of art therapy as viewed through the eyes of patients via their consented self-expressions and associated mood outcomes.

    Demonstrate and explain uses of a mood meter application for behavioral health patients and healthcare providers; including its function as an emotional change tool and its strategic role for emotional regulation.

Kendra’s fourteen-year experience includes lifespan populations with a focus on adolescents and experience in chronic physical and mental illness. Developed and implements a grant-based digital art therapy program for behavioral health patients in crisis as well as hospitalized adolescents and children with co-morbidity diagnoses and trauma. Kendra supervises post-graduate students for art therapy registration and instructs courses including family art therapy, research, and substance use population.

Discussion will include considerations for assessment of individual situations to encourage developmentally appropriate care and help identify clear rationale behind choices made. In addition, reviewing seminal writings and comparing them with current literature, practice, and more recent understanding of brain development will aim to support student supervisors and academicians as they teach students, perpetuating clarity and confidence in the work of a child life specialist. The author will discuss the fine, but important, difference between operationalized definitions of concepts often used in research settings and reconciling those definitions with individuals in everyday practice. Experiences of the author on a multidisciplinary research team and within the context of teaching students in the classroom and in clinical training will provide examples for attendees to consider and discuss.     Katherine Bennett, MEd, CCLS has worked as a Certified Child Life Specialist at Monroe Carell, Jr. Children's Hospital since 2001. She has worked with children and families in the areas of operative surgery, community outreach/education, PICC, inpatient medicine with all age groups, and in the burn center. Currently, she serves as the educator for Child Life & Volunteer Services, planning and coordinating the clinical training experiences for emerging child life professionals, onboarding new employees, working with the department's clinical advancement program and providing education about the needs of children in healthcare settings to colleagues both in and outside the Vanderbilt community. She has written and presented at international conferences and in several published outlets about such topics as medical play and its impact, developmental theory applied to hospitalized children, and teaching child life in the clinical and university settings.
